Daming Palace National Heritage Park

Introduction

The Daming Palace was one of the most magnificent architectural complexes among the three major palaces in Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). This historical marvel, translating to the "Palace of Great Brightness", was constructed in 634 for Li Yuan, the founder of the Tang Dynasty, who reigned from 618 to 626. The Daming Palace served as the imperial power center for more than 200 years, symbolizing the height of the Tang Dynasty's architectural and cultural achievements.

Architectural Layout

Spanning over three square kilometers, the size of Daming Palace is comparable to Central Park in New York City. The palace complex features 11 gates and over 40 identified sites of palatial structures, predominantly situated around Taiye Lake, which forms the nucleus of the inner court in the northern section of the palace. The southern part, known as the outer court, comprised significant architectural halls such as Hanyuan, Xuanzheng and Zichen. Danfengmen Avenue, the main thoroughfare of the palace, boasted an impressive width of 176 meters, underscoring the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty's urban planning and design.
